Birds have some odd ideas about what constitutes their des res. Last year’s winner in the weirdest places to nest stakes was the Blue tit pair who’d chosen to raise their brood in a cigarette disposal unit on the wall of a public toilet block.
So far this year, the leading contenders are the Coal tits whose cheerily cheeping young are huddled cosily into an air ventilation duct underneath a local church.
Some years ago a local Blue Tit family built nests in a local cigarette disposal box as your picture shows, they were in and out like fiddler’s elbows! I often wondered if they have no sense of smell!

Yes, I wondered about the smell and whether it then affects their own sense of smell once they emerge. I think most small birds find their food by sight so maybe it doesn’t matter – but it’s certainly interesting to ponder.

I am glad there is room to go in and out!

They’re very good at squeezing into small spaces. 🙂
