Spring is definitely in the air here in south Wales. Wildflowers are wakening and blossom is bursting, migrating creatures are on the move and those that don’t migrate are thinking about procreation. For birds, that means nest building, and this Magpie obviously had some rather grandiose ideas about the size of nest it was going to construct. But had it bitten off more than it could chew?
Success!

I have seen lots of large birds carrying nesting materials but the smaller birds are a bit slower. I have seen House Sparrows going in and out of Swift boxes that they have occupied in previous years. I put out fleece for nesting materials that don’t seem to have been taken advantage of as yet this year, although I have captured videos of Great Tits and Marsh Tits taking the fleece in previous years. All we can do is observe and hope all will be well.

Actually, you’re right. I haven’t seen smaller birds with nesting material yet either. Maybe they’re smart, considering this weekend’s weather forecast.
