As we’ve had a very unseasonal high of 14°C today (this is still meant to be winter remember), it’s not surprising that birds’ thoughts are turning to nest building. Today, at Cosmeston, I saw Magpies and Carrion crows stick-carrying, a Blue tit with moss in its beak perched on the entrance hole of a conveniently placed nest box, and this Coot transporting bits of reed to a secretive location.
Things are pretty much awry here, too. I am waiting for the gardener to arrive to cut down the Hawthorn hedge (in Winter) but now I doubt it will be done because of nesting birds…
I have seen many birds starting to build so it may be best to wait. Sorry to hear you are taking out a hedge – is there a particular reason for its removal?
I don’t know why I wrote ‘cut down’! We are merely shortening it because it shades a neighbouring garden if it isn’t kept neat and tidy. It’s a Hawthorn hedge which I had planted about twenty something years ago; there were some beeches planted at the same time but not one remains. It is currently over 1.5 metres tall…
Good news, and it sounds an impressive hedge. I’ll bet your local wildlife loves it. 🙂
