I spent some time in the churchyard surrounding St Augustine’s Church today, enjoying the wonderful wildness of this lovely place, which is now being managed in a way that enhances its flora and fauna. And it’s working a treat! The grounds are awash with wildflowers and the bird boxes are full of new life.

I admit I did feel a little sorry for the bird parents though. They have to work so hard to feed their chicks – it’s like they’re stuck in a loop: search frantically for food, deliver food, remove pooh, repeat!

I came across your blog by accident, searching for a plant name, and am so glad I did. I really enjoy your daily posts about our natural world. It has encouraged me to look afresh – and I’m an artist so thought of myself has someone who notices what is around me.
Best wishes,
Richard

You’ve made my day, Richard. Thanks for your very kind words – my hope is to get people to look closer at the natural world around them so I must be doing something right. 🙂

Looks like a pair of Great Tits have nabbed a Swift box!

Yep. Two pairs were checking out those boxes a couple of weeks ago but only the bottom one is now occupied. I had a chat to Alan about it – he said Great tits often gazump the swifts but it might not be a problem as they often finish their first brood before the swifts arrive back, the swifts could then take over the box and the tits find somewhere else for their second brood. I’ll be keeping an eye on these boxes over the summer – there’s a convenient bench to sit and watch life happen. 🙂

No wonder they look so ragged at this time of year.

Mrs Blue tit was looking particularly ragged today. And to think they’ll probably have another brood as soon as the first has fledged.
