Storm Kathleen was making her presence felt with strong winds blasting across Cardiff Bay this morning but, luckily, it wasn’t cold, and was mostly dry. When scanning for birds near the Barrage sluices, I noticed this dead fish – I’m not sure of the species, though perhaps one of you might know.
As you can see from the photos below, nets have been strung around the edges of the sluices, perhaps to prevent people from jumping and maybe to stop them throwing things in to the water as well. However, as the tidal range in the Bristol Channel is the second highest in the world, during the highest tides fish sometimes get caught in this netting.
That’s sad if that’s the case – wonder if this is lack or forethought or care. Wonder if they know at the Cardiff Harbour Authority as they are in charge of that area

Fish get caught like this almost every time there’s a very high tide. I’m sure the Harbour Authority know and they could fix the nets to pull them higher but they display very little care for the local environment. They fail to remove the rubbish that accumulates in the Bay, and they often use pesticides and herbicides close to the water despite the damage they can cause to flora and fauna.
I once reported spraying I had witnessed to National Resources Wales – turned out it was contractors for the CHA and they had been doing the spraying illegally, without the correct permit. So, I have no faith in them fixing the nets to protect the fish.
