Cygnet cuteness

I had to go in to Cardiff today so I included a walk through ‘Little Venice’, the small network of canals south of the city centre. When I turned the first corner, this lovely family of Mute swans came immediately in to view – two adults and their six adorable cygnets.

Sometimes these canals are full of rubbish but, fortunately for the wildlife, it seemed much cleaner today – perhaps the local river-cleaning volunteer group have been busy.

As the canals have footpaths along both sides and are frequently used by pedestrians, the wildlife gets used to humans, and these adult swans were obviously used to people. They swam over to me, looking for food, and I was happy to oblige with some of the suet pellets I usually carry, though I was pleased to see that the cygnets remained wary and stuck to a vegetarian diet.

I’ve been watching this pair of Mute swans from the time they first started building their nest, in exactly the same spot as last year, and I spotted a couple of tiny fluffy heads about a week ago. When I passed the location today, mum, dad and their eight gorgeous cygnets were out for a swim around their river inlet.

The word cute is much overused when it comes to baby birds, but these cygnets really were the epitome of cute, preening and tidying their baby feathers, diving and splashing about enthusiastically.

This was the scene earlier today in Cardiff Bay, a glorious morning for mother (or father) Mute swan to take their seven cygnets for a glide along the edge of the Barrage.

Seeing these gorgeous little balls of fluff made my day! I’d been watching these Mute swans for several weeks, building their nest, then sitting on eggs, so it was a real delight to see the proud parents gently shepherding their newly hatched brood around a local river inlet on Thursday.
