As well as the lovely Grayling butterfly spotted on Wednesday’s walk in Aberbargoed, we had a wonderful surprise when my friend Sharon spotted these two tiny reptiles, basking on a wooden boardwalk in the Grasslands National Nature Reserve.

The reptile known as the Common lizard and also the Viviparous lizard, once had the scientific moniker Lacerta vivipara but is now Zootoca vivipara. Viviparous is a zoological term meaning ‘bringing forth live young which have developed inside the body of the parent’ (Oxford Dictionary), though what apparently happens in this lizard’s case is that the young hatch from their eggs as they are deposited outside the body (Fauna Britannica).

As their name suggests, these lizards are common in Britain, though I’ve only seen them twice in my five years’ residence in Wales, which is why Wednesday’s sightings were such a delight. You can find out more about them on the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust website.

I’ve been going through my travel albums (always fun) to see what other creatures I’ve encountered in foreign parts that I can share with you and I found some of the many lizards I saw during my trip to Tanzania in August 2014.

My photos show two different individuals, photographed several hours apart, and I think these may be female Agama lizards, of which there are some 37 species in Africa, but I don’t know that for sure. So if anyone does know, please do add a comment below. I also have some photos of the males but they deserve a post of their own!

It’s St David’s Day here in Wales so I thought to feature something Welsh, but I’ve already covered the Daffy and the Taffy, and leeks aren’t exactly inspiring. Then I thought ‘Dragon’! Though I have photos of Welsh dragon sculptures and carvings, this is as close as I can get to the real thing, the lizards I encountered almost daily while living in Cambodia.

Though these critters all look quite different, they are the same species, Calotes versicolour, also known as the Oriental garden lizard, the Eastern garden lizard and – no surprise – the Changeable lizard. As well as having naturally variable colouration, the males also take on red and black hues during the breeding season.

Interesting facts? They have incredibly long stiff tails which, unlike other lizards, they do not drop. However, like other lizards, they do shed their skin, they do lay eggs – between five and fifteen, usually in a hole in the ground or a hollow in a tree, and, like chameleons, they can move each eye independently of the other. They mostly eat insects and small rodents but they don’t have teeth for chewing so gobble them down whole, after a little pre-dinner food-bashing. Sounds remarkably dragon-like to me, though I’m not sure of their attitude to gold!
