You know he is there, standing
in a field, like all the others
but he is not like them.
from ‘The Baobab Tree’ by Rachel Sawaya
I love these words from Rachel’s prize-winning poem (more about that and her here). In a few deceptively simple words she encapsulates what I love about the baobab: it is not like any other. No facts and figures today. Instead, I hope my photos, taken in Tanzania in 2014, will speak to you of the Baobab.

What a special tree – haven’t seen anything like it:) It looks like it had been there for a very long time.

They are certainly special, Inger. Some can grew as old as 1500 years, though I’m not sure about this particular tree.

They are amazing, Joyce. One day I’d love to see the species that grows in Madagascar. If you google that, you’ll see what I mean – incredible!

I hope you get to see them soon before many more of them are destroyed. Why oh why do we persist in destroying the natural environment? Progress is so destructive when compared to primitive peoples who live in harmony with nature, for the most part. I do admire your adventures and vast knowledge 🙂

Oh, I know. I just do not understand why anyone chooses to destroy nature, even here in Britain, with places like the Gwent Levels. We MUST find alternatives to such destruction I think.
My adventures are much more local these days and my knowledge not so vast – always aiming to learn more! 🙂
