To be honest, I’m not one to get excited about days like today – too much commercial hype and money wasted on needless rubbish. But, when I spotted this almost-heart-shaped Scarlet elfcup, I thought I would at least share a little love for Nature from Nature.

Excellent!
I’m a big fan of these lovely fungi, and I too have been calling them Scarlet Elfcups for years… until last month, when I was corrected by a fellow inmate of the local wildlife reserve…
Apparently the Scarlet Elfcup and the Ruby Elfcup, two different species, can only be told apart by microscopic examination of their tiny hair-like structures.
So… that was me told. Having failed to make said examination, I could clearly only label my photos ‘Scarlet or Ruby Elfcups’.
You, I’m sure, as a proper pro, have doubtless had that thing under the ‘scope at 400X before committing yourself.

Yes, indeed, Guy, the elfcups in this location have been examined under microscope and been confirmed as Scarlet.
