I’ve been reading a book by a man who has gradually been losing his hearing and, as the book progresses through a year of his life, so he has lost the sounds of certain birds whose songs are no longer within the range of his hearing. I find this incredibly sad but it’s also made me value even more the birds I can hear, like this little Robin. Having finished its breeding and parenting duties and its moult, it’s now singing to stake its claim on a nice bit of territory to see it through the lean months of winter.

Lovely capture with the bokeh. Yes to lose any of our senses is sad. Would be sad to not hear so many wonderful things.

I agree. I would find it devastating, I know.

I hope that man will consider going to his local NHS Adult Hearing Centre where he can be fitted with top-notch hearing aids for no fee!
I can recall the day I got my new ‘herring aids’ the birdsong sounded astounding!

His deafness is the result of illness as a child and has gradually got worse throughout his life. He does mention hearing aids but finds them difficult, as I know many people do.
The book, if you’re interested, is The Last Wilderness: A Journey into Silence by Neil Ansell. I found it extremely moving.
