Green woodpeckers are very skittish birds I find. Any sudden movement and, with a loud yaffle, they’re off. Luckily, with this bird, I was partially hidden by trees. Although it heard me coming and flitted up from the ground where it had been poking about for ants, at least it didn’t fly far so I was able to focus my shot between the branches and twigs.

A few times over the course of this summer, we’ve been lucky enough to get a green woodpecker in the garden. We’d seen it quite often, feeding on a grassy area near-by, but, as you say, they’re very skittish, and it always used to fly off before we could get close. But being able to ‘hide’ in the dining room and view it through the patio doors meant we could watch it for ages, before it went off to see if the ants were tastier elsewhere.

Sounds fabulous to be able to use your dining room as a hide, and to get such long views. I’m envious! 🙂
