Cardiff Bay has a reputation as a lovely area but the sad reality is that when you place a barrier across a bay into which two rivers discharge then the garbage that flows down those rivers, especially after raging storms and heavy rain, is bound to accumulate. And, though the local council does remove some rubbish, this particular corner of the Bay is never cleared. No chance of any lunch for the Grey heron here, I’m afraid.

Sadly, yes. And this is only one of many such corners around the Bay.

Hi sconzani
A lot of Cardiff Bay seems blighted by rubbish washed down the rivers. Which particular corner is this?

Hi Jon. I know your volunteers do great work clearing a lot of local rubbish (though I don’t think this should be reliant on voluntary labour). This particular area is at grid ref ST19467413. It is so full of rubbish that vegetation has grown over the rubbish closest to the original shoreline.

Ah, yes — that’s what we call Dr Who Beach (because the Dr Who Experience used to be next to it). We were there last September, and it’s a regular location on our schedule, but for various reasons (including nesting season) we probably won’t get there again until the autumn, I’m afraid.

As I said, I know your team does a great job around the Bay and up the rivers but leaving huge piles of potentially toxic materials like this in the water for months on end should not be an option. I think more needs to be done to stop the rubbish accumulating in the first place.
