barkfly eggs, eggs, insect eggs, ladybird eggs, moth eggs

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? An age-old question that I’ll leave you to discuss amongst yourselves. Eggs have featured in several blogs this year: a Coot and her eggs back in May (Coot eggs, 31 May); the spawn of Toads and frogs, 22 February; a lovely moth laying her eggs on grass stems (Pale tussock moth, 7 June); and, another insect, in Shieldbug eggs and hatchlings, 26 July.

There have, of course, been lots of other eggs I’ve seen that I haven’t written about, at least not this year. Those shown above are the eggs of a barkfly species, encased in a lovely silken cover, and a little clutch of ladybird eggs. And, below, are the empty egg cases of a Buff-tip moth and the tiny caterpillars that had recently emerged from them.

Shieldbug eggs and hatchlings

Recent leaf-bothering has turned up several clutches of insect eggs, usually laid on the undersides of leaves. Most I can’t identify but these are two I can. I knew this first lot were shieldbug eggs but I wasn’t sure of the species. Luckily, an entomologist who follows me on Twitter was able to tell me that this clutch was laid by a Common green shieldbug (Palomena prasina) and, due to the greyish colour of the eggs, he could also tell that they had been parasitised, probably by a species of parasitic wasp.

As you can see, this second clutch of eggs had fared much better, escaping the wasp’s ovipositor to produce these tiny hatchlings. Despite their reddish colouring, these are also Common green shieldbugs; the nymphs will go through several changes of colour and patterning before they assume their final adult appearance.

They say ‘Good things come in small packages’ and you couldn’t get much smaller than these tiny packages, the eggs of the Gorse shieldbug (Piezodorus lituratus) sitting on a gorse flower in Lavernock Reserve. I’ll be heading back soon to try to find the hatchlings.
