The big wet

We’re half way through Storm Christoph – it drenched much of the country last night and is forecast to blast us again later today and all of tomorrow. It’s times like these I am thankful I live in a town that’s mostly built on a clifftop, though even here the heavy rainfall has caused surface flooding on the already sodden ground. I can enjoy the reflections but my thoughts are with those much less fortunate.

Storm Dennis has dumped a huge amount of rain across Wales this weekend, on to ground already saturated by the rain from Storm Ciara and, sadly, this has led to severe flooding in some south Wales communities. I am fortunate to live in a town which, although by the sea, is mostly built upon the clifftops, between 30 and 70 metres above sea level, so we have escaped with just a little surface flooding. And that, as you can see, can provide some very attractive reflections.

337/365 Condensation

Condensation: noun; Water which collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it (Oxford Dictionary).

As I live in an old, Grade-II-listed building that only has single glazing and I don’t like to have my heating on so high that I can wear t-shirts all year round, I sometimes get condensation on the inside of my windows. It can be a bit tedious to deal with but it’s also rather lovely, especially when you look closely and see the outside world reflected upside down in the water droplets.

318/365 Good weather for ducks?

I always thought the expression ‘It’s good weather for ducks’ referred to wet weather: persistent rain leading to the formation of large pools of water that a duck might enjoy swimming in. Turns out I may have been wrong, and it may well have come from comments by the shooters of waterfowl, who find wet weather better for their hunting.

I certainly hope this gorgeous female Mallard doesn’t meet that fate. How could anyone shoot such a beautiful bottom … er, creature?

I’m moving house in a couple of weeks so I’ve started saying goodbye to some of my favourite local spots – not that I won’t ever see them again, as Roath Park will still be a short 30-minute train ride away, but now it’s just a 5-minute walk.

I’ve taken lots of photographs of Roath Brook in the 17 months I’ve lived in this area, mostly from a similar angle, standing on one bridge and looking towards the other, ’cause it’s just such a lovely scene. Here are just a few of those shots, mostly taken in autumn and winter as the leaves obscure the scene in spring and summer.
