Storm Hannah has been making her presence felt since yesterday evening and, though the sun came out late morning, the wind is still blowing a gale. I headed down to Cardiff Bay to see if the storm had blown any interesting birds in but found nothing unusual – in fact, very few birds at all were braving the weather. So, I tootled along to the beach at the base of Penarth Head cliffs, where it was a little more sheltered, and there I found a new fossil – always a bonus! – and this cute little ground beetle plodding purposefully along amongst the detritus, not at all interested in having its photo taken.

That’s a very cute beetle. Is it iridescent?
We’ve had a very tired (male) pheasant in our garden – it roosted in our sycamore last night but looked ill today. We’re hoping it’s still alive tomorrow. Rather sad, really – it probably got caught in the high winds.

Iridescent, yes, Val. I thought that might help ID it but there are a lot of iridescent beetles it seems.
Good luck to your pheasant.

Looks a bit like a stag beetle, but I’ve never seen an iridescent stag. We sometimes get iridescent beetles here but different from this one. The pheasant is sadly gone. Crows are visiting. 😦

Lovely. I don’t see many Beetles, sadly.

I don’t see many either – I think you need to be prepared to get down and dirty to find them.
