Double trouble

This was really funny to watch though, after a while, I began to feel guilty for laughing at the poor little Blue tit because it was getting more and more agitated about that other Blue tit in the mirror.

Birds, of course, don’t understand the concept of a mirror or reflective surface, so think they are seeing another bird that has invaded their territory and try to chase it away.

In case you haven’t seen one of these mirrors before, they can be attached to a post opposite the entrance to someone’s driveway so they can more easily see approaching traffic when trying to exit their property.

Other than the sweet little Blue tits (Spreading the word, 27 February, and Reappearing, 7 August), the other local species of tits haven’t appeared on this blog very often this year. Perhaps I am guilty of ignoring the commonplace, in which case shame on me, as they are amongst the birds I see and enjoy watching most often. Though I haven’t blogged about them, I have drawn four of our local tit species so, as this 2024 self-imposed bird-drawing challenge comes to a close, I’d like to share these …

It’s been very quiet during my recent walks as the local birds have been recovering from raising their chicks and then going through their annual moult. But yesterday was different. Some birds were leading their youngsters through the trees and shrubs, all of them frequently emitting contact calls to keep in touch with each other. Others – like this little Blue tit – were singing again, and those joyous sounds made me realise how much I’d missed hearing them, and how cheering their songs can be.

Hungry noisy Blue tit babies

I heard them before I saw their nest box, that loud insistent cheeping of hungry baby birds. In this case, they were hungry noisy Blue tit babies that were causing their parents to fly themselves ragged, hunting through trees and bushes for food for their young.

In Welsh the Blue tit is Titw Tomos Las. Titw presumably translates as tit and las is blue but I’ve no idea what tomos means. If there are any Welsh speakers out there who can explain the name, I’d appreciate hearing from you in the comments.

Small but feisty; also cheeky and cheerful,  endearing, frequently noisy, wanderer of the woodland, delightful, a colourful character – I’m sure you could all think of a lot more words and phrases to describe the Blue tit, one of the ‘ordinary’ birds we probably all take for granted but probably shouldn’t, because beautiful!

In 2020, the Blue tit was the third most common bird to be recorded by people taking part in the annual RSPB Garden Birdwatch, which is happening again this weekend, 29 – 31 January.

So, if you have a garden, how about spending a relaxing hour enjoying the birds that visit your green space? You can read all about it and do your bit for citizen science by checking the RSPB website here.

bird nesting spots, bird nests, birding, birdwatching, Blue tit, British birds, coal tit, odd spot to nest

Birds have some odd ideas about what constitutes their des res. Last year’s winner in the weirdest places to nest stakes was the Blue tit pair who’d chosen to raise their brood in a cigarette disposal unit on the wall of a public toilet block.

So far this year, the leading contenders are the Coal tits whose cheerily cheeping young are huddled cosily into an air ventilation duct underneath a local church.

It’s amazing how much time you can ‘waste’ trying to take photos of all the birds that spend time in a tree. I know because I’ve spent several hours doing just that. I can watch the tree as I sit at my desk/dining table or on my living room sofa (my kitchen/dining/living room is just one big room) so it’s easy to spot birds arriving or to hear them singing and calling, but it’s not so easy to sneak over to the open window to take photos because, obviously, if I can see the birds, they can also see me! So, my clothes drying rack was moved in to service as a not-very-effective bird hide.

First up was a Blue tit – always cute and very chirpy. As the tree – some kind of ornamental cherry – is now quite leafy, it’s hard to get a clear shot and, of course, the birds don’t exactly pose for me.

Next, and returning continuously throughout the day, a couple of Goldfinches. Their cheerful twittering has been a joy in recent days.

Surprise of the day was this Willow warbler, a real rarity in my urban setting. It visited on and off for a couple of hours then, presumably, continued its migration path, heading north to the Welsh Valleys to find a spot to breed.

And so to bed … this Woodpigeon had obviously had a hard day.
