British lichen, fencepost lichen, lichen, lichen on fencepost, lichen on wood

I’ve probably said this before. I’ll probably say this again in the future. Next time you’re passing a wooden fence- or gate-post, particularly an older post, take a moment to look at the top of it because there will almost certainly be a marvellous miniscule landscape, with a dazzling display of diverse textures and lush colours, and possibly even a tiny creature or two.

British lichen, lichen on trees, Ramalina fastigiata, trumpet-shaped lichen

I’ve seen this lichen described as a fanfare of trumpets, which is just the most perfect description for a lichen that can be found adorning the branches and trunks of trees throughout the year almost everywhere in Britain. Meet Ramalina fastigiata.

British lichen, colourful lichen, lichen on wood

Here’s another lush miniature landscape, this one from a walk along the coastal path this morning, the lichen growing on a wooden fence post, exuberant in the clean fresh salty air.

British lichen, lichen, lichen landscape

How luscious is this?! Punctuated by shrub-like mosses, the multitude of colours like a kaleidoscope of flowers in bloom – it’s a miniature landscape of lichen.

British lichen, Cladonia lichen, Cladonia species

One of the Cladonia lichen species is the food of Reindeer but I doubt this is it, though I don’t actually know which Cladonia species this is. As you can perhaps guess from the snippet of sign showing in my photo, the lichen was growing well on a signpost at the Wildlife Trust reserve I visited today. The brownish blobs on the tops of some cups are where the spores of these attractive lichen develop.

#365DaysWild, British lichen, Cosmeston, Cosmeston Lakes Country Park, lichen on fence post, springtail

Much to the amazement – or perhaps the amusement – of Cosmeston’s dogwalkers, I spent rather a lot of time closely studying the tops of fence posts today. The variety of lichen to be found on them is really quite astonishing but I wasn’t only admiring the lichen. There were even more interesting things sitting on those fence posts …
