I was enchanted, during this morning’s local meander, to spot a pair of Long-tailed tits nest building – it seemed so appropriate for Mother’s Day, though in this case it may be a few weeks before the female bird becomes a mum.

The nest was almost totally hidden inside a tangle of bramble branches and, once the bramble leaves grow, will be completely obscured.

And the nest itself was only about one third built, so I’ve included, below right, a photo of a Long-tailed tit nest that I was shown a couple of years ago, after its occupants had fledged and the bush containing the nest had been chopped down. Of course, I’ll be heading back to this location to follow progress from a suitable distance.

351/366 Wild word: nidification

Nidification: noun; [zoology] nest-building; origin: mid 17th century from Latin nidificat– ‘made into a nest’ (from the verb nidificare, from nidus ‘nest’) + -ation (Oxford Dictionary).

This might not be the time of year for nest-building for most critters (though I did spot a Magpie poking a stick into what looked like a potential nest site yesterday) but it is the time of year, with the trees bare of leaves, when you can see some of our birds’ nest-building efforts from earlier this year, and previous years, if they’re birds that keep the same nest site year after year. And I only just learnt this new word this week so thought I’d pass it on.

I’ve written before about the House sparrow colony at Penarth Marina. During yesterday’s exercise walk, I noticed they’re now well in to their nest-building chores.

I’m sure the fluffy plumes of the pampas grass seed heads will make a wonderfully soft lining for their nests, and I have visions of tiny naked sparrow chicks snoozing snugly in their cosy warmth.

116/365 Among the chimney pots

So this is what all yesterday’s gull screeching was about!
Mr Lesser black-backed gull was letting the neighbourhood know he had arrived and this was his territory so look out any other gull couples who thought they’d try to muscle in. And today Mr LBB and his mate were getting down to the serious business of nest building amongst the chimney pots across the back lane from my flat – or, at least, Ms LBB was – he just stood watching her do all the work. I do hope the nest goes ahead – what a thrill it would be to watch from my bedroom window as they raise their chicks!

Spring is definitely in the air here in south Wales. Wildflowers are wakening and blossom is bursting, migrating creatures are on the move and those that don’t migrate are thinking about procreation. For birds, that means nest building, and this Magpie obviously had some rather grandiose ideas about the size of nest it was going to construct. But had it bitten off more than it could chew?
