British wildflowers, seed pods, seedheads, seeds

During my meandering walks over the past couple of weeks I’ve been collecting images of various seedheads and seed pods. I’m always amazed at the wide variety of forms these take – in fact, I think I’ll go through this exercise again, looking more closely at the seeds themselves as their diversity is also quite astounding. Meantime, here’s a video slideshow of what I’ve gathered so far.

At this time of year, when there are few wildflowers in bloom, the presence of Rough sow-thistle, with its glowing yellow flowers and fluffy white seedheads, is a lifesaver for thirsty bees and butterflies, and a boon for finches wanting to nibble at its seeds. And, for me, it provides yet another example of the sculptural beauty of the seedheads of plants.

Over the summer, one of the local fields I regularly walk around was a sea of yellow, chock full of tall flowering Ragwort plants.

Now that it’s autumn, the landscape has changed to a rich brown, dotted with tiny spots of white, the fluffy Ragwort seeds. It would be easy to overlook this brown field but, when you look closely, the seedheads are quite lovely.

British wildflowers, clematis vitalba, Old Man's Beard, seedheads, Traveller's joy

The seedheads of Old-man’s-beard – or perhaps you prefer to call it Traveller’s-joy – the native British Clematis vitalba, are a feathery delight, and I can rarely refrain from taking photos of them.

I also relish the delicate vanilla fragrance of the plant’s spiky flowers.

So, imagine my delight during today’s walk when I found both flowers and seedheads on the same plant. Spring and autumn, scent and seeds – a delicious, if slightly strange combination.

British wildflowers, seedheads, seeds, water on seedheads, wet weather

If you thought I’d exaggerated about how wet last month was, it’s official – Derek, the Welsh BBC weatherman, yesterday tweeted that ‘October was wetter than average in Wales with 208mm of rain’. Temperatures and sunshine were also below normal, and, having just returned from a long local walk, I can tell you it’s very squelchy out there. Still, the wet has its compensations as today’s seedheads testify.
