Spring came to south Wales on Saturday at approximately 3.30pm and lasted about 4 hours. (It’s supposed to return again next week and stay a few days but, in the constantly changing contemporary climate, it pays not to count your chickens – or, maybe that should be, your rays of sunshine!) Amazingly, as soon as the sun appeared, so too did the butterflies. It was like a door had been opened – where had they been hiding, I wonder? In the space of about 30 minutes, I saw Peacocks and Commas, several never-settling Brimstones, a distant large-or-small White, and my first Speckled wood of the year. Oh, and a couple of Bee-flies – not butterflies, obviously, but the cutest wee flying things you ever did see so I’ve included one here. It was delightful!
Lovely images! There’s nothing more uplifting than the sight of the year’s first batches of butterflies!

I agree, and thanks, Theresa. I’m still not seeing many butterflies here yet, just the odd Speckled wood. Looking forward to seeing more …

Lovely to see butterflies so early. I’ve spotted a bee here and there, and a few moths, but not butterflies yet. This weather, by the way, not much different from past decades… it has always been changeable in the UK, from hour to hour, day to day, week to week, etc. But it’s the seasons that seem to be changing… Spring is very late this year, at least here in mid-Wales it is. Our Hawthorn’s only just getting leaves, so I can’t imagine that it’ll be in flower by next month.

I always think of the weather and the seasons as being inter-related: spring is late because the weather has been much colder / the weather has been much colder because spring is late. Certainly, the dates for this year’s first sightings of things like butterflies and bees and hoverflies are later than last year … but with today’s sunshine, I think we’re finally getting there. 🙂
