Apart from looking splendid, there’s some good foraging to be had within your selection. Wild garlic leaves are just waiting to be gathered and made into pesto. Walnuts, or even hazelnuts rather than pine nuts keeps the cost down and you can get away with using the cheaper oils as a base because the bite of the garlic leaves just overpowers more ‘upmarket’ offerings. Keeps well in the freezer too. Not so good if you aren’t keen on pesto r garlic though…..

Much of this area is ancient woodland and, fortunately, both locals and visitors respect its status. It’s a feast for the eyes not the stomach,
