Golden-ringed dragonflies are impressive beasties! Though the Emperor dragon (Anax imperator) is larger and has the widest wingspan of all the British dragons (10.5 cms), the Golden-ringed (Cordulegaster boltonii) has the longest body of any British odonata species (females grow to around 8.4 cms). This is a dragon I rarely see as it has a preference for the acidic conditions found in the heathlands and peat bogs of upland locations, so you can perhaps imagine my surprise at finding one on 12 July during my walk around RSPB Radipole, a seaside site with extensive reed beds surrounding a tidal river and lake.

It was patrolling one of the footpaths through the reeds and then, miraculously, settled within viewing distance on a Buddleja with first one, then a second Norfolk hawker. And I was delighted that I was able to share this experience with an interested couple who happened along at just the right time and who were also excited to see both dragonfly species together.

The dragon with the golden rings

The dragon with the golden rings – that sounds like something out of The Lord of the Rings; reminds me of the dragon sleeping on its huge horde of gold under the mountain. But no, this particular dragon is a dragonfly, and the golden rings are the marks that encircle its body. Hence its name, the Golden-ringed dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii). This is not a dragonfly I see locally but was a stunning surprise during a recent visit to Parc Penallta, a park on a former coal tip in the Welsh Valleys.

It may have been only my second ever sighting of this gorgeous dragonfly species but, with its distinctive markings perfectly matching its name, I was certain of my ID – this is a Golden-ringed dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii). These beauties can be found in upland areas, heathlands and woodlands that have the flowing water they favour for breeding. The Golden-ringed I saw was close to a small river in a woodland setting, no more than 100 metres from where I spotted the White-letter hairstreak I posted about yesterday. That was a memorable walk indeed!

You can read more about this dragonfly, and see lots of stunning images, on the British Dragonfly Society website.
