British orthoptera, Parc Penallta, Slender groundhopper, Tetrix subulata

It’s always exciting to find a new beastie, though, in truth, they often find me and I don’t always know what they are when I first see them. That was the situation with this little creature, a Slender groundhopper (Tetrix subulata).

For a change of scenery, I’d taken a train up one of the local Welsh valleys for a wander around Parc Penallta, a former coal spoil tip. Though it was a warm, sunny day, wildlife was thin on the ground, so when something tiny hopped out of the way of my walking boot, I quickly bent over to investigate. The creature looked grasshopper-like but not one I recognised. Luckily, its shape is distinctive so, when I got home, some online searches quickly turned up a name.

Though the Slender groundhopper can be found in much of the southern half of Britain, it is not common in my area so I was very pleased to see this interesting species.

This pair of Canada geese and their four well-grown goslings were living on one of the fishing ponds at Parc Penallta when I visited recently.

There were several men fishing at the adjoining lake but, fortunately, they seemed to be leaving the birds – there were Mallards and Moorhen swimming about as well – to occupy one lake while they fished the other. Long may that sharing and consideration continue!

The dragon with the golden rings

British dragonflies, Cordulegaster boltonii, dragonfly, Golden-ringed dragonfly, Parc Penallta

The dragon with the golden rings – that sounds like something out of The Lord of the Rings; reminds me of the dragon sleeping on its huge horde of gold under the mountain. But no, this particular dragon is a dragonfly, and the golden rings are the marks that encircle its body. Hence its name, the Golden-ringed dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii). This is not a dragonfly I see locally but was a stunning surprise during a recent visit to Parc Penallta, a park on a former coal tip in the Welsh Valleys.

British damselflies, damselfly, Emerald damselfly, Parc Penallta

Last week I met a friend for a walk at Parc Penallta, one of the many colliery spoil sites that have become public parks and that are hot spots for biodiversity. And, as we explored, I was surprised and delighted to find this Emerald damselfly (Lestes sponsa), one I don’t see in my local area. As well as its distinctive colour, this damselfly can be identified by the way it holds its wings at a 45-degree angle to its body when perched.
