Except, perhaps, for a post about local flora, this will be the last of my blogs about what delights of Nature I discovered during my recent visit to Weymouth, and this is definitely my most unexpected find, an all-white grasshopper. It didn’t have pink eyes so I don’t think it qualifies as albino but it was certainly unusual.

I wasn’t sure what type of grasshopper it was, as it’s a nymph not an adult, and they can be tricky to identify, but I received some valuable assistance from the National iRecord verifier for Orthopteroid insects when I posted a photo on social media. David wasn’t sure either at first but I used Photoshop to fiddle with the light and contrast in my image so as to show the features a little more clearly and, from that, David could tell: ‘There is a fair amount of kink in the side keel, shown pretty clearly … Given that it actually looks most like Field GH, that they are the ones likeliest to be nymphs now & that they are also one of the most variable spp, the chances of it being anything else are slim.’ So, Field grasshopper it is!

Just to illustrate how very unusual this creature was, here’s a photo of a normal Field grasshopper that I took just a few days ago.

Back in October 2016, I interviewed a Long-winged conehead (Conocephalus discolour) for a blog post (The curious conehead). That was an adult grasshopper, a handsome creature but not particularly easy to identify – in my blog, the creature and I discuss its distinctive features (yes, mad as a hatter me!).

During my recent walks at Cosmeston Lakes Country Park, I’ve become reacquainted with these coneheads but these have been nymphs and very much easier to recognise, as they’re basically pale green with a dark stripe right down their centre backs.

Mottled grasshopper

While I was sweltering in the heat on the Aberbargoed tip last week, I was being serenaded by the local wildlife, the twee-twee-twee of Siskin calling to each other in the scattered trees above me, and the rasping of grasshoppers on the scree slopes around my feet. When one of those little raspers stayed still long enough for a few photos, I realised they were a species I’d not seen before, Mottled grasshoppers (Myrmeleotettix maculatus). Their preference for dry places means the south-facing slopes of the coal spoil provide the perfect habitat, and they are a common sight on the former coal tips of the Welsh Valleys.

Some snippets from the insect world around me:

200720 common red soldier beetles

A sure sign that it’s now high summer, Common red soldier beetles (Rhagonycha fulva) can be seen everywhere, especially on the flowers of umbellifers, demonstrating why they are often called bonking beetles.

200720 green-veined white (2)

Also caught copulating, these Green-veined white butterflies (Pieris napi) were being annoyed by a third of their kind, trying to get involved in the action.

200720 small copper

On the subject of butterflies, the second brood of Small coppers (Lycaena phlaeas) is now on the wing. This stunning specimen was only the second Small copper I’d seen this year, so was a very welcome sighting.

200720 nettle weevil

There’s nothing cuter than a weevil. This one is, I think, a Nettle weevil (Phyllobius pomaceus).

200720 ants on ragwort (1)
200720 ants on ragwort (2)

I found this odd: a colony of ants, farming a horde of aphids on this ragwort plant, have extended their nest up the very stem of the plant.

200720 meadow grasshopper

To finish this post, first, a Meadow grasshopper (Chorthippus parallelus) nymph and …

… another nymph, also often a meadow dweller, this time a cricket species, a Long winged cone-head (Conocephalus fuscus).
