Nothing says late summer/early autumn to me more than a Meadow brown butterfly on Devil’s-bit scabious. This is a typical sight now at my local country park.

Scabious is such a great plant insects. I do not feel there are as many Meadow Browns here in South Hampshire this year.

It’s interesting how butterfly numbers change from place to place. Meadow brown are quite plentiful here but it’s been a terrible year for Common blue. I guess it’s partly the timing of their life cycles and the larval plants they use. 🙂
